Our Food Knowledge Is Fading (And So Is Our Health)

Today was an interesting day in Portland, Jamaica.
I really love the peace and quiet of the countryside. The ability to go outside and pick mint, banana, and other herbs. To just walk to the beach or to the river and enjoy nature. The smell of the trees, and that fresh scent when the rain falls. Clean air. A different kind of peace.
But with countryside living, I’m also starting to see the downside. Right now, there’s a lack of ground provisions, (due to hurricane Melissa and some foods being out of season), so most meals are eaten with rice. Fried chicken is also very popular. So, day after day, people are eating fried chicken and rice, with little fiber.
Even tea is limited as most people are using tea bags now, which means more microplastics and fewer real herbs. Less nature on the plate, and more processed items in the body.
And now, even in the countryside, we’re seeing a rise in diabetes, dementia, stroke, and cancer - all the things that were once rare.
It’s time for us to go back to what we were taught.
The knowledge is dying out.
And it’s time for us to reclaim it.
